Long time ago, as I was a child, I created a chessboard from a wooden board. Back to Paris, it ended into a cabinet. And that was it, End of the story. So I thought….Not long time ago, my mother unearthed my creation and sent it to me in Beijing. I was happy when I received it but didn’t know what to do with it. I asked my son if he would like to learn how to play chess with me. His answer was “Yes! But, what is it?” I explained to him what playing chess was. As he was already able to play the game of Go (WeiQi in Chinese), he found it really interesting. That was the beginning of the story. Then, I thought “what about the pawns?” I could easily buy a set of them in a store. Ready to play in a few minutes. It was too simple and not really fun. But, I have a 3D printer…..Because of that, I decided to print pawns with it. I could easily find some open source models online and print them. But I know how to use Blender, a wonderful 3D modelling software…..Because of that, I decided to model every pawn by myself, print them out and give them to my son. So I modeled the pawn and printed 8 of them using a nice blue filament. But, my son has lots of good ideas. He can draw. He can do some modelling using Blender. Why not ask him to design with me the knight, the bishop, the rook, the queen and the king? That way, he will have a chess game that nobody else on earth will have. Moreover, he will have to develop the skills required to create a series of 3D models that will have to be easily printable. It is a challenge for him but he loves it!Because of that, it will take more time to get to the point where we will have fun together playing chess. But, it will take little time before I have fun with my son, drawing the knight and his friends, modelling them in 3D using Blender and printed out the result of my son’s creation.Stay tuned, I will be back later with the next episode of “The lonely wooden chessboard and its new 3D printed friends.”
